What Yarn Works Best for a Lace Shawl?
Choosing the right yarn can completely transform your finished shawl.
For this easy knit lace shawl pattern, look for:
- Lightweight yarns like fingering, sock, or sport

A single skein of beautiful yarn can truly shine in this project, making it perfect for that special skein you’ve been saving.
How to Knit a Triangle Shawl (Beginner Overview)
Triangle shawls are one of the most popular shawl shapes—and for good reason.
Most triangle shawls, including this one, are knit:
- Starting with just a few stitches
- Increasing gradually on each row
- Growing into a wide triangle shape
As you knit, the shawl gets larger and larger, which makes it exciting to watch your progress unfold. For this shawl, the lace is knit in the middle without increases making the pattern easy to memorize and very beginner friendly.

How to Style a Lace Knit Shawl
One of the best things about a lace shawl is how versatile it is.
You can wear your shawl:
- Draped over your shoulders for a classic look
- Wrapped like a scarf for everyday wear
- Loosely tied in the front for a cozy, layered style
It’s the perfect accessory for:
- Cool summer evenings
- Air-conditioned spaces
- Transitional weather in spring and fall
Once you start wearing shawls, you’ll be surprised how often you reach for them.
Tips for Knitting with Variegated Yarn
Variegated yarn can make your shawl absolutely stunning—but a few tips will help you get the best result:
- Let the yarn shine: Simple lace patterns work best with bold color changes
- Avoid overly complicated stitch patterns that compete with the yarn
- Be mindful of pooling—sometimes alternating skeins can help
- Embrace the uniqueness—no two shawls will ever look exactly the same
This pattern is especially beautiful with colorful yarns, making it a fun and creative project. I recommend using your variegated yearns for each of the ends and then choosing a solid for the middle to let the lace design shine!

Desert Weather Shawl Notes
- Blocking: This shawl is designed to be oversized, however, garter stitch can grow and stretch when blocked so be careful when blocking not to stretch out the shawl too much on your mats.
- Choosing Colors: When selecting yarn choose two variegated colorways for each tip and a coordinating solid for the center lace. The garter stitch really allows those hand-dyed yarns to shine while the lace pops best with less noisy solid color.

Finishing
Weave in ends and block your shawl by soaking it in luke warm water, along with your favorite wool wash, for 15 minutes. Squeeze out excess water with a towel and lay flat to dry. Don’t block on towels as it can retain moisture and not allow your finished shawl to dry. Be careful when blocking as garter stitch tends to want to stretch.
Here is a quick Instagram video showing how I weave my ends in on garter stitch.
